Before You Fly

Baggage Information

Know the Size and Weight Limits

Variables such as the aircraft used and passenger load may affect the size of carry-on bags allowed on an airplane.Check with the individual airline you are flying regarding the permissible dimensions of carry-on luggage for your flight.

Pack valuable items and things you cannot live without in a small carry-on bag. The basics include your passport and travel documents, medications, jewelry, and extra eyeglasses if needed. Once those are secured, ask yourself what you would need to get by for a day if your luggage didn't arrive.

If you are traveling heavy but on a budget, check with your airline to determine the fee for a second bag and whether you will be charged for overweight luggage.Starting in 2008, many major and smaller airlines changed their checked-luggage policy to charge passengers for checking a second piece of luggage.

Check In

Find your Airline

The first thing you’ll need to do when you arrive at the airport is to locate your airline. Airports are divided into terminals, and different airlines are housed in different terminals. There are also different terminals for arrivals and departures.

Depending on what you’ve packed, you may need to check a bag or two. Most airlines will allow you one carry-on bag, in addition to one hand-held bag (like a laptop case or a purse.)[5] If you are planning to check bags, go immediately to the counter for your designated airline.

In order to board your plane, you’ll need a boarding pass. If you’ve chosen to check your bags, give your airline attendant your identification and they’ll be able to print out your boarding pass for you. If you’re not checking your bags, you can still go to the attendant for help, or you can choose an easier and faster option.
